Welsh Exports

Data for latest 4 quarters (qtr 2 2003 through to qtr 1 2004):

The value of exports for Wales for the latest four quarters rose by £321 million (4.7 per cent) compared to the previous 4 quarters. The value of exports for the total of all UK regions also rose over the same period, but by a lower percentage than in Wales (1.8 per cent).

Within this increase for Wales, exports to non-EU destinations rose by 30.2 per cent (£556 million) partly offset by a reduction of 4.7 per cent (£235 million) in exports to the EU. Corresponding figures for the UK were a 21.1 per cent rise and a 9.9 per cent fall respectively.

Germany was the largest export market for Welsh products, followed by USA, Belgium, France, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Italy.

Chemicals was the highest value export product sector for Wales with engineering, metals, automotive and energy also in the top 5.

The Wales percentage increase over this period was the 7th highest amongst the 12 UK regions. Northern Ireland and the South West were the regions with the highest percentage increases (up 21.8 per cent and 20.3 per cent respectively).

Total exports from Wales fell by 2.0 per cent in the first quarter of 2004 compared to the corresponding quarter in 2003, this compared to a 8.7 per cent fall for the UK as a whole over the same period.
