Neath
Neath is a town, population approximately 60,000, located on the river
of the same name in south Wales. In Welsh, the river is the Nedd, and
the town is Castell-Nedd. (Ruins of a small Norman castle are still to
be seen, close to the shopping centre.)
Neath has existed as a settlement since
Roman times, when the fort of Nidum stood on the spot. Remains of
the fort are also still standing, within a housing estate. The actual
fort covered an area which now includes the playing fields of Dwr-y-Felin
Comprehensive School.
The borough council has been absorbed into the larger unitary authority
of Neath Port Talbot.
