John Dawes

Sydney John Dawes, international rugby player, was born 29 June 1940 in Pengham, Monmouthshire. He was educated at Lewis School, Pengam, and attended University College, Aberystwyth, then Loughborough College.

A former Newbridge player, Dawes went on to play for, and captain, London Welsh, and represented Welsh Universities before winning his first cap in 1964 against Ireland. He then went on to win a total of 22 caps at center for Wales. He made his final appearance against France in 1971

Former captain of London Welsh RFC, He was also chosen to captain the British and Irish Lions. Dawes was appointed coach of the national team and in 1977 coached the British Lions on their tour to New Zealand.

His services to rugby football have been rewarded with an OBE.
