Ogmore

From Welshpedia

Ogmore (Welsh: Ogwr) is a village in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales on the River Ogmore. It grew around the now ruined Ogmore Castle, built by the Normans.

The village does not lie in the parliamentary constituency also called Ogmore, which lies further up the Ogmore River in Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taff districts.

The Ogmore Valley once had many deep coal mines and numerous levels (drift mines). The deep pits included:

Rhondda Main - sunk in 1914 and closed in 1924
Aber - sunk in approx 1865, closure date unknown
Penllwyngwent - sunk in 1905 and closed in 1969
Wyndham - sunk in 1886 and closed in 1984
Western - sunk in 1887 and closed in 1984

Note

Ogmore-by-Sea is another village close by, but on the coast.
